 The Legacy - September 2015

Friday September 25th, we left for Camp Barnhardt in Albemarle, NC. We camped with Crew 1465 and had a wonderful experience. There were almost 300 venturing scouts from Southeast Region 5 along with some surprise visitors. We had the opportuntiy to meet the president of the national youth VOA along with some of his officers. Shooting sports was a busy area with rifle, pistol, shotgun, knife and hatchet throwing. Canoes and kayaks were available at the lakefront and the campfire was very entertaining. We are looking forward to next years event hosted by Mecklenburg County Council at Camp Grimes from Sept 16-18.

Day Camp Staff - June 2015

During the week of the 15th, several members of the crew volunteered to work at Etowah Day Camp. The areas that received assistance from crew 140 were crafts, waterfront, and the swimming pool. Everyone had fun, enjoyed great fellowship, and went to great lengths to make sure the campers had a quality experience at Etowah Day Camp. On behalf of the camp staff, we thank crew 140 for your service.

 Skeet Shooting - April 2015

On April 10th, the crew traveled to Camp Grimes for a weekend of skeet shooting, camping, and a service project. We stayed in the staff cabins, cleaned them and  replaced the smoke detectors and light bulbs as needed in preparation for Summer Camp. Our service project was clearing debris from a bridge and trail at camp. Meals were cooked outdoors by our newer members.

Providence High School Musical - March 2015

On March 5th, the crew attended the opening night of Parker’s musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,  at providence high school. Parker played the role of the entrepreneur runner up and participated in many of the musical numbers. As an unexpected bonus, Nick was selected to participate as a spelling bee contestant (he was ejected for misspelling the word “floogaloom” – he did receive a juice box as a consolation prize.) we look forward to more theatrical endeavors.

Appalachian Mountain Ski Trip - February 2015

We drove up to ASM at Blowing Rock, NC on Saturday morning. After checking in and a quick group lesson, we buddied up and hit the slopes. A fresh layer of snow from the evening before had them in excellent condition. The cool weather made sure we didn't over heat. Our non-skiing contingent spent the day either preparing the cabin for occupation, acquiring food for our meals, or just hanging out in the Sky Lounge watching the action. Close to 5pm, we started ferrying our folks up to the cabin in Mr Rhyne's four wheel drive. The crew prepared our meal and cleaned up. Card games and a few rounds of pool, filled the evening. After breakfast, we hiked in the snow, observed nature, had an invigerating snow ball exchange, and finished with a Scout's Own worship service. Immediately following, we started ferrying folks down the mountan and headed home. Fun was had by all. What a spectacular group of youth.

Scouting for Food - January 2015

We met at Cross and Crown Lutheran Church on Janury 24th to help Troop 140 drop off bags for the annual Scouting for Food collection drove in our surrounding neighborhoods. The following weekend, we drove through the same neighborhoods collecting bags filled with food. This annual effort is in support of Loaves and Fishes. In a massive joint effort, the scouting units within our council collected 260,000 pounds of food in one day. After completion of the project, our youth agreed unanimously to sign up for their own assigned area next year in an effort to collect more food. It was a great day for scouting.

Inner Peaks Climbing Center and Lock In - December 2014

We met at church and carpooled to the Inner Peaks Climbing Center. After a period of group instruction, the youth and some adults turned loose climbing within the arena. A lot of fun was had by all. Following the climbing adventure, we headed back to the church for our first annual lock in. We played games, watched movies, enjoyed food & drinks, and continued to enjoy great fellowship.

Venturing Rendezvous - November 2014

We headed out to Belk Scout Camp for the first ever Venturing Rendezvous. Several Venturing Crews participated. The theme was the Amazing Race. Each team raced across the camp completing a myriad of team building activities. All participants developed a special relationship with a can of spam. In the evening,we hung out in the dining hall, played games, got to know Venturers from other crews, and generally had a great time. We look forward to particpating again next year.

SR-5 Legacy Event - Ocotber 2014

We visited Camp Barstow for a weekend of High Ropes, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun Shooting, Human Foosball, Flat Water Paddle Boarding, and various and sundry other activities. This was our first adventure that involved venturing youth from all over the southeast region. We camped in campsites, ate our meals in the dining hall, and conducted assemblies in the main field. Yet again, a lot of fun was had by all.
